Warehouse Cranes

The efficiency and storage capacity of a warehouse is only as good as the material handling equipment it uses. Apart from the structure itself, materials handling equipment allows warehouse workers to efficiently and safely transport, lift and store the various objects and merchandise in a warehouse. This equipment includes forklifts, scales, industrial shelving, pallets, pallet jacks and conveyors. Often overlooked is the vital role that warehouse cranes can play in your materials handling needs. These cranes are designed to aid workers in the movement of very large and heavy objects and even other equipment. In manufacturing warehouses, they allow workers to position heavy objects in position with a precision they would otherwise not be able to achieve. Keep reading to learn about the various types of warehouse cranes in use today.

Bridge Cranes

Bridge cranes are used in warehouses, shipyards and construction sites to move and accurately place large and heavy materials. As the name implies, bridge cranes span a gap between two runway tracks. The crane mechanism, the hoist, travels along the bridge. This design allows the hoist to access much of the area beneath the bridge structure and manipulate objects on three axes of movement. These cranes are often used in single story warehouse operations such as manufacturing.

Jib Cranes

Jib cranes are another type of crane frequently seen in warehouse settings. More stationary than bridge cranes, jib cranes feature a crane or hoist on a jib or boom attached to a wall or stationary mast around which the boom rotates. In some cases, the boom is fixed to the mast and does not have the ability to laterally rotate. Jib booms are often used in manufacturing to move large objects into place.

Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes are, as the name implies, cranes that are designed to float back and forth between a gantry. A gantry is an overhead frame structure from which supporting equipment is suspended. The gantry cranes are very similar in design to a bridge crane, though the bridge crane category includes those cranes attached to a movable gantry, allowing workers to employ the crane only when it is needed.
