Beyond the forklifts and conveyors and the bins and totes, an often overlooked element of materials handling efficiency is the shelving that is used to store the transported material. Because shelving is used to store product and material when it is not doing anything, when it is in that grey area between delivery and sale, it is often the disregarded workhorse of materials handling equipment. But the efficiency of a warehouse is only as good as the shelving. Types of Pallet Racks
Pallet racks are so integral to warehouse operations that many warehouses are designed almost entirely around the placement of the racking. The most common type of pallet racking system is called selective pallet racking. Selective pallet racking can be broken down into two main types: roll formed and structural.
Roll Formed Pallet Racking is manufactured in a “tear drop” style – named for the tear drop shaped holes into which the cross beams are secured. Designed for both durability and adaptability, rolled formed pallet racking systems are one of the most common types of pallet racking systems.
Structural pallet racking systems are similar to roll formed except that they use a a bolt to attach the horizontal load beams to the uprights.

Roll Formed pallet racking is highly adaptable and easily installed. Rolled formed components are lighter and easier to maneuver than the structural variants. Roll formed pallet racking easily adapts to the weight, volume and size of loads. The teardrop style is interchangeable among different manufacturers and the tear drop clips allow for quick removal and repositioning to accommodate different sized loads and products.
Structural Pallet Racking is designed primarily for strength and holding capacity. The bolted horizontal beam connections yield a stronger and more rigid system than the tear drop variant. The robust construction of structural pallet jacks makes them ideal for high use and harsh conditions. While not as adaptable as the rolled formed type, structural pallet racking still offers a wide range of designs and load capacities. Common configurations include pushback, flow and drive-in applications.
